and inclusion at Halma

Diversity is one of three strategic engagement priorities that our Sustainable Funds Group consider when researching companies.

Diversity and Inclusion at Halma

Halma has notably improved gender diversity at Board and Management levels. Halma is a global group of 45 autonomously managed technology companies in over 20 countries who provide innovative solutions to many of the key problems facing the world today.

Pablo Berrutti, Senior Investment Specialist and Sujaya Desai, Investment Analyst, from the Sustainable Funds Group speak with Jennifer Ward, Group Talent Director at Halma. They explore Halma’s approach to diversity and inclusion and how a focus on this over the past six years has delivered significant progress. Some of their key achievements include:

  • 40% gender balance on its plc Board (increased from 18% in 2014)
  • 58% of Executive Board positions now held by women (compared to zero in 2014)
  • 42% of their global workforce are female*

  • Shared purpose and mindset
  • Inclusion comes first, no point having more diversity if it isn't heard
  • Focus on IQ and learning agility in recruitment, not having done a specific role for x numbers of years
  • Manage recruiters very actively
  • Practical, behaviour based learning - just highlighting bias doesn't change it
  • Breakdown gender role norms - e.g. parental leave and flexibility
  • Continuously monitor both the types of roles and career progression to manage pay gap

Improving gender diversity

We commissioned a research project with the University of Technology in Sydney to compile a set of recruitment and retention policies that can be tied to tangible improvements in diversity outcomes.

The research identified thirteen tools that have been successfully used to recruit and retain women in organisations and features case studies of companies successfully using these tools.

We have used the findings to open dialogue with some of the biggest companies we invest in across the globe and will continue to address this important topic.
